EFFORTLESS
POWER WORKSHOP:
ATHLETIC
EXCELLENCE THROUGH MINDFULNESS
The safest
and most effective way to increase tri-athletic performance and
excellence is the relentless pursuit of perfection in our
swimming, biking and running forms. We can go faster and
farther with less effort, less injury and less recovery, as we
improve our economy, efficiency and grace.
Given
adequate health and fitness, the single most important skill for
perfecting our swim-bike-run form is mindfulness – the
ability to perceive directly and immediately for ourselves
exactly what is present and true here and now. Specifically, as
athletes, that skill is proprioceptive mindfulness – the
ability to perceive directly and immediately for ourselves
exactly what is present and true here and now in our bodies.
Proprioception is the “energetic language” of the body’s
neurological system that informs the central nervous system of
the precise location, orientation and relationship of its myriad
muscles, joints and connective tissues. Fluency in the language
of proprioception leads to balance and coordination.
This
90-minute workshop introduces athletes to simple movement
exercises that greatly enhance proprioceptive mindfulness.
These exercises are based on the principles of T’ai Chi.
Seamless continuity throughout the workshop allows athletes to
enter the “zone” of moving meditation and begin to develop the
skills that will empower them to conduct triathlon training and
racing in this zone.
The “zone”
is a heightened state of awareness that arises through the
harmonious union of body and mind. It is a state of “mind in
matter”, the first prerequisite for effortless power. Training
and racing in this zone of proprioceptive mindfulness is the
most effective method for improving economy, efficiency and
grace in athletic form.
Prerequisites
Above all,
we must approach this exploration of effortless power with
patience and an open mind. Many of the exercises and techniques
may be new and unfamiliar to conventional athletes. I present
the material in a simple manner so that everyone feels
comfortable participating. Do you have a genuine commitment and
passion for endurance athletics as a path of health and fitness,
regardless of your experience level? If so, I promise that you
will benefit from the experience and will take with you some new
tools to use on your quest for athletic excellence.
Schedule: Effortless Power workshops are offered at
Lake Placid Health and Fitness Center on Sundays from 12:30 p.m.
until 2:00 p.m. This allows athletes who are in town to train
for Lake Placid Ironman a chance to train in the morning.
Sessions offer a relaxing way to recover from the weekend
training, before returning home. Dates are listed below.
